Desert Island Discs

is a long-running and iconic BBC Radio 4 program where a guest, known as a "castaway," is asked to choose eight music tracks, a book, and a luxury item they would take if they were stranded on a desert island. The show serves as a biographical interview, using the guest's choices to explore their life, career, and the reasons the items are personally significant.

Key Details

  • Format: Each guest selects eight pieces of music, discusses their life, and chooses one book (beyond the Complete Works of Shakespeare and the Bible/sacred text, which are provided) and one non-practical luxury item. At the end of the program, they choose one of their eight music tracks as the "one track" they would save from the waves.

  • History: The program was devised and first presented by Roy Plomley, with its first broadcast on January 29, 1942, on the BBC Forces Programme. It has since become one of the most enduring and beloved radio programs in British broadcasting history.

  • Presenter: The current presenter is Lauren Laverne, who has hosted the show since 2018, when she took over from Kirsty Young. Past presenters also include Michael Parkinson and Sue Lawley.

  • Guests: Over 3,400 episodes have been recorded, featuring a wide range of public figures from politics, entertainment, science, and sport, including individuals like Steven Spielberg, Adele, Bono, J.K. Rowling, and Sir David Attenborough.

  • Availability: Episodes are available to listen to online via BBC Sounds and as a podcast, allowing listeners to explore decades of archives.
