RE : REFLECTIONS

Assessment  - Formative 1: Emerging Disruptive Technology (EDT) Explainer

Joff Rae March 2024

REFLECT 1 On the Use of AI Tools and Processes

  • Reflection: Discuss how AI tools and processes were utilised in researching, analysing, and compiling the explainer. Reflect on the benefits and limitations of using AI in this context.

REFLECT 2 On your learning

  • Reflection: Start a learning journal and perhaps summarise (a sentence) a few thoughts from this. What epiphanies have you had? What is sparking your interest? How might you investigate further? What aspects of the process did you most enjoy? What challenged you?

So, I built the paper as a website in Squarespace on the first website I had open (www.isparx.group) with references in a non linear manner:

  • wrote an introduction.  It ended up a conclusion…

  • took the questions directly from the guideline and used these to format my page.

  • started with the “what” category and wrote a short description of each EDT.

I used Google to search and review several relevant websites, videos and articles concentrating on reliable sources; collected a number of websites and saved these to a bookmark folder (approximately 80 - 90 links).  I was picking up links from associated content and websites as I went through various searches primarily using Google or Youtube in Chrome.

I made a series of png banners in Photoshop for “6g”, “cps” and “edge computing”. and a gif for “6g, cps and edge computing”…

Started to build structure of ‘WHAT’ category.  Started with 4 videos to explain the EDT headlines I had selected - 6G, CPS and Edge Computing.

I told Gemini I was writing a report; asked it to rewrite the text I’d already written (cut and paste intro).  Asked it to write with a formal academic tone.  This was to start a conversation with Gemini on the subject of the paper.  I did not use the output except for comparisons.

I then asked Gemini to help formulate and propagate a structure of each of the categories of ‘why’, ‘how’ and ‘impact’.

As a further prompt I used the draft summary of each heading, ran this through Gemini asking for a rewrite.  I made small changes to my original text and used the structure offered by Gemini..

I used these 3 prompts:

Prompted I'm writing on 6g WHY Purpose and Drivers  Problem/Need Addressed: Clearly state the issues or problems the technology aims to solve. Why was this technology developed?  Drivers of Adoption: Discuss societal, economic, and environmental factors driving the technology's adoption. How do these drivers influence its development and acceptance?  Target Audience or Sectors: Identify who benefits most from this technology. Is it specific industries, sectors, or the general public? Any suggestions?

Prompted and now add a section with the following structure: HOW Real-world Application Demonstrating real-world application: Choose a relevant UNSDG as your focus area and select 2-3 case studies that illustrate how your chosen technology supports achieving the chosen UNSDG. Ensure the case studies represent diverse contexts e.g local NZ, global, indigenous or impact-focused applications.  Analysis: Use these examples to analyse the problems or needs mentioned earlier and to show the technology's practical application and implementation.  Refer UNSDGs

Prompted now another section to conclude; IMPACT Opportunities and Challenges Impact Analysis: Analyse the potential impacts, e.g. societal, economic, or environmental, of the technology. Consider both positive and negative aspects. Highlight any ethical considerations. MORE Further Exploration Expansion: Suggest additional resources for deeper understanding and further exploration e.g. videos, articles, websites, and influencers in the field. These could include or also be in addition to those used to research your Explainer)

I asked Gemini for information on UNSDGs with regard to 6G, CPS and edge computing.  Gemini gave a very detailed response and some of that detail is used in the case studies offered.  The information was cross referenced, checked and the references are provided.  I chose to research each SDG Targets and the outcomes.

I then formatted the text on the website and added relevant videos.

I took the text - select all, cut and paste from the website in one cut; pasted in to Apple Pages with a selected font, Montserrat on a blank page (initially to format & spell check)..

After some minor formatting, I printed the pages as a .pdf.  I selected a 4 page layout per page; and printed in A3 double sided fast print.  8 x A3 pages from 30 pages.

I added a reference A4 with the original report guide on the reverse.

I rewrote the content and indicated reference sources in the text.  As expected I discovered anomalies or had formed opinions and observations that compelled me to make changes.

However the output has remained a conventional text, website and the A3 presentation.  I may format the A3 as 16 x 9 presentation slides with sourced video - but Audrey hates the format.

The website was updated with the edited text.

Output as an A3 x 4 page layout (8 x A3 pages from 30 original pages).

Again as an A4 x 2 page layout (15 x A4 pages)

Resources include:

  • image bank (dropbox);

  • Youtube video playlist;

  • A3 x 4up pdf;

  • A4 x 2up pdf;

  • website + A4 pdf; text A4;

  • presentation slides.

I would like to experiment with a wheel image sourced from Hexa-X; 3 points for the what, why, how and develop a way of telling this story in 3D as an AR+ interactive installation.

I am going to summarise future assignments & offer as a blog.
